The first Summer Institute for Teachers of Spanish at Central Connecticut State University opened in July 2000 with a 9-credit program specifically designed for teachers and graduate students of Spanish. The Institute provides participants with intensive Spanish language practice, as well as in-depth study of aspects of the culture, language and society of several Spanish speaking countries. It also includes a technology component to help participants develop their computer- and Internet skills.

The Institute is entirely oriented towards the practicalities of teaching, and emphasizes classroom application of the materials covered. Participants in the Institute are expected to design small projects that they can use in their classrooms. Projects created in the Institute integrate language,  culture, and technology. Institute participants share their projects, so at the end, each leaves with a good number of units they can use in their own classes.

Participants are expected to have at least an intermediate command of Spanish. They should be able to read, write, and speak the language for sustained periods of time. They should be able to use Spanish in order to communicate linguistic and cultural contents. All the sessions are conducted in Spanish; all materials used are in Spanish, and participants are expected to use Spanish at all times.

When combined with the Inter-University Master Specialization in Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures and the regular academic year, the Summer Institute for Teachers of Spanish provides the opportunity to complete the course requirements for the Masters Degree in two summers and one academic year.
