FACULTY
Edward FORCE was born in Middletown, N.Y. in 1938. Dr. Force earned the B.A. from State University of New York at Albany (1959), majoring in German and minoring in English. Continuing his studies at Indiana University, he received the M.A. in 1961 and the doctorate in German literature in 1964. His dissertation was a study of the critical evaluations of the controversial German playwright Frank Wedekind's works. He taught at DePauw University (1963-65) and Clarkson College of Technology--now University--(1965-66) before joining the CCSU faculty in the fall of 1966.
His teaching specialties are German language, literature, and culture, and Humanities, and he has taught practically all our German language, literature and culture courses, as well as a Humanities course, "The Artist and Society." He has written the textbook for German 315 and compiled anthologies of literary works for German 305 and 360, as well as preparing a wide variety of other teaching materials for German courses. He has striven to make himself as versatile as possible, so that he can teach any of the German courses, if necessary, above and beyond those fields to which he has devoted particular attention, such as the older liteature and culture.
In addition, he has used his knowledge of the German language to translate numerous German books on a variety of subjects into English for publication, as well as translating various materials for Connecticut businesses. This has provided him knowledge of, and insight into, a number of subjects in the realms of German history and culture.
Having seen the CCSU German program grow and adapt to meet new student needs, he has tried to contribute to that process. Knowing the future will bring further changes he looks forward to taking an active part in their conception and implementation.
